Vicki Havard, Fourteen IP’s Commercial Director, shares her journey with us

Tell us a bit about yourself; your career background?

When I graduated from MMU with a BA (Hons) Degree in Social Science, more years ago than I’m willing to admit,  my original  plan was to become a social worker with aspirations to progress into social policy or social research.  But, having bought my first home the summer that I graduated, a mortgage dictated that I accept a position as an Internal Systems Analyst with a local telecoms company, Ashland Communication Equipment Ltd.  This role was my introduction to the world of ISO 9001, operational processes, process auditing and measuring operational performance it was meant to be a stop gap but and I loved it!  My responsibilities grew with the company.  I was initially promoted to Administration Manager and ultimately Director of Corporate Values.

Following Ashland’s acquisition in 2006 by SpiriTel Plc, an AIM listed communications provider, I was appointed as Head of Shared Services for the SpiriTel group. This position allowed me to gain significant experience integrating and harmonizing subsequent group acquisitions, specifically in the areas of Human Resources and Shared Services.

Following SpiriTel’s acquisition in 2010 I remained with the acquiring company to support the transfer of the remaining SpiriTel employees before exiting in favour of a new start up that was apparently being called Fourteen IP Communications until  something more appropriate was decided on …. and the rest is history!

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Undoubtedly the people I work with.

And what are the most challenging aspects of your job?

Saying no when you really want to say yes.  I guess I can compare it to having two teenage boys, they give me lots of practice saying no in circumstances when it would be easier to say yes!

How do you relax?

The gym, walking my dog and roller skating much to the dismay of my husband, during my early skating sessions I fell over a lot, but only one trip to A&E so far!

If you could choose anyone, who would you choose as your mentor?

If I could have chose anyone past or present, it would have to be Steve Jobs.

What inspires you?

The enthusiasm, progress and achievements of the young people who have joined the Fourteen IP.  They are fearless!

What technology can’t you live without?

Microsoft Task List.  Probably old school but losing task list doesn’t bear thinking about!

Who has been the biggest influence in your career?

Probably my parents who ensured I acquired a work ethic

Apple or Android?

Android  (Sorry Steve!)
